Baseball team beat College of the Desert

Rio Hondo’s Baseball team continued their winning streak of impressive performances after earning a sweep over College of the Desert by defeating them 13-8 at home on April 29 ending their three-game series which started on April 26.

After pitcher Joe Willis put in another outstanding start for the Roadrunners on April 26, Cameron Legrand sought to do the same for Rio Hondo two days later on the road in Palm Desert.

First-baseman Randy Buenrostro helped get him some run support in the top of the second inning by reaching base on a single and scoring his teammate, right-fielder Jordan Abernathy.

But Desert would quickly get that run back in the bottom of the frame when left-fielder Tanner Olthoff recorded the sacrifice fly by scoring third-baseman Cole Danielson.

Legrand did not have to wait long for more run support when Desert starting pitcher Dallas Asuncion helped him out by committing a wild pitch and ultimately allowing catcher Danny Marquez to score from third.

Legrand seemed to be cruising along until the fifth inning when Danielson would again come in to score a run for Desert, and tie the game, after his teammate right-fielder Trenton Covel doubled down the left-field line.

Legrand finished his day giving up only four hits, striking out eight and two earned runs in seven innings of work.

Relief pitcher Anthony Franco came in for Legrand in the eighth inning and ultimately picked up the win as the Roadrunners showed their moxie when the game mattered the most.

A three-run top of the ninth led by third-baseman Mauricio Guadarrama and designated hitter R.J. Romo who both finished with two RBIs on the day.

The Roadrunners went on to win the game two by a score of 6-3 with game three taking place just two days later, on April 29.

The final game of the regular season was played at home, where Rio Hondo has been nearly unbeatable for most of the year.

This game turned out to be no different and in the very first inning it was business as usual for Rio Hondo’s offense.

The bottom of the first saw the Roadrunners drop a four-run inning, something they have been doing to opponents a lot lately, led by Abernathy who had two RBI’s in the opening frame.

Brady Carlson started the game for Rio Hondo, but with a healthy four-run lead Carlson would let that slip away in the top of the fourth.

Desert tied the game and would eventually take the lead in the fifth inning, led by their catalyst covel who scored a run and knocked in two during his team’s surge.

But just like they have done for much of the season, Rio Hondo seemed to find a response when an opponent has taken the lead and that’s exactly what happened on Saturday.

The bottom of the fifth inning was the turning point of the game and just like the huge first inning, the Roadrunners used another huge scoring inning to put Desert away for good.

Rio Hondo scored five runs in that inning, and with Carlson being knocked out of the game after just three innings, the Roadrunner relied on their bullpen to see out the victory by only allowing four more runs in the last six innings.

The game finished 13-8 with Rio Hondo completing the sweep of a conference rival.

Next up for the Roadrunners was a post-season matchup at Golden West College on May 6 at 2 p.m.

It was a close game and ended with a score of 6-5 in favor of Golden West College. Rio Hondo wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as R.J. Romo got a single in the top of the first inning to bring home teammate Gabe Chavez.

The Roadrunners kept the momentum going and got two more singles in the second and third inning before Golden West finally got on the scoreboard themselves.

Then in the bottom of the fourth Golden West tied the score at three a piece when D. Maui doubled as C. Marshall and D. Persi scored.

The Roadrunners followed up with two more runs in the fifth inning while Golden West scored a single as well. The game was now 6-5 with Rio Hondo in the lead, but unfortunately they were unable to keep it.

Marshall singled for Golden West in the bottom of the eighth to bring home Persi and tie the game. Then in the bottom of the ninth, with Rio failing to score another run to secure their win, Golden West managed to get a run in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory.

With Golden West winning the first game, Rio Hondo look to return to action on May 7 at 12:30 p.m. at Golden West College.

If Rio Hondo manage to tie the series, there will be a game three tie breaker that will be held following the second game if necessary.
