Justine Manjarrez to join teammate Vargas at York College

Rio Hondo College Women’s basketball player Justine Manjarrez signed her National Letter of Intent on Thursday afternoon and will join teammate Julissa Vargas to continue her collegiate basketball career at York College in York, Nebraska next fall.

Manjarrez, a five-foot-four guard who played high school basketball at Cantwell Sacred Heart in Montebello, is a dead-eye three point shooter who was the best shooter for the Lady Roadrunners this past season.

She averaged 10 points per game while shooting 35 percent from the three point range this season, and connected on a total of 67 three point shots this year.

On January 23, she exploded with a 39 point game against Victor Valley College. That night she had an unbelievable shooting performance connecting on a total of 11 three pointers, giving her a total of 33 points solely with her accurate three-point shooting. Manjarrez also made the honorable mention list for the Foothill Conference after her succesful season with the Lady Roadrunners.

York College is an NAIA school located in York, Nebraska and they are a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. The women’s basketball team finished 7-13 last season and is coached by Matthew Madole who is heading into his fifth season as head coach at York.

After signing her letter of intent, Manjarrez said that she felt accomplished as this was a goal she set for herself her freshman year.
Manjarrez will join her teammate Julissa Vargas at York, as they make a terrific duo that every basketball program would love to have.

Vargas is the playmaker and leader on the court, while Manjarrez provides scoring and shooting touch from the outside. She also stated that Rio Hondo was the only school that recruited her out of high school which speaks to local high school players that aren’t recruited by four-year colleges right out of high school.

There is no need to panic because being patient and attending Rio Hondo while working hard under the development of coach Steve Johnson can lead to a great opportunity at the next level of basketball.
