Lady Roadrunners Continue Winning Streak

The Rio Hondo Women’s soccer team have started off the 2015 season in an incredible form as they show their determination to defend the Foothill Conference Title by staying at the top of the table.

The Lady Roadrunners had an intense away game against Taft, which they had to travel about 130 miles (both ways) on Sept. 29. That afternoon, Rio Hondo escaped with the 3 points and won 1-0, with Sabrina Gonzalez scoring the only goal of the match, which was assisted by midfielder Janeth Acuna. It was a very close match in which the Lady Roadrunners defended their lead until the very last minute.

When it comes to soccer, defending is equally as important as attacking, because it is a team sport and it takes the cooperation of 11 players to make this happen successfully.

Rio Hondo played their second away game of the week against Ventura on Oct. 1. Traveling is part of the game, but the Lady Roadrunners have shown throughout the first stages of the season that traveling does not affect their game play.

Janeth Acuna opened up the scoreboard with an insanely early goal merely ten seconds into the match. Very impressive to say the least; as Alexis Marinero and Erika Lizarraga participated in the play leading up to the goal.

It did not take long after that before Sabrina Gonzalez decided she wanted to get one in the goal for herself, netting a goal exactly one minute after Janeth Acuna’s, giving Rio Hondo a 2-0 lead. Gonzalez was assisted by defender Maritza Acuna.

The Lady Roadrunners managed to get a comfortable lead away from home in a matter of minutes. Ventura ended up scoring a goal in the 20th minute but it was not enough as they fell a goal short. Which meant another important away win for the Lady Roadrunners.

Rio Hondo currently have a record of 7-0-2 with a six-game winning streak. It is an impressive start, especially considering the fact that only one of those games was a home game. This speaks volumes about the team. They are not afraid to travel and defeat an opponent in their house, it’s what they do; It’s what is needed.

Being able to win games, comfortably, while playing away from home shows the level of skill and determination that the Lady Roadrunners have. It is what they have been training and preparing for since the end of last season, when they clinched the Conference Title.

Practice makes perfect, and it is really showing this season as the Lady Roadrunners continue to shine as they defend their 2014 Foothill Conference Title.
