Baseball team on the brink of another conference championship.

The Rio Hondo College baseball team are one win away from clinching the Foothill Conference title after defeating San Bernardino Valley College, 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Roadrunners (26-8, 18-4) entered Tuesday’s game tied with SBVC (21-13, 17-5) for first place in the Foothill Conference and in need of winning the three-game series against the Wolverines in order to become conference champions.

Rio Hondo improved their record against SBVC to 2-0 this season after previously defeating the Wolverines, 6-5, on March 7.

Rio Hondo freshman pitcher Joe Wills pitched his second complete game of the season and improved his record to 9-1. Wills allowed eight hits and one earned run while striking out five and walking one. The right-hander leads Rio Hondo starting pitchers with an ERA of 2.91 and has struck out 49 batters in 74.1 innings pitched this season.

Rio Hondo will play the second game of the three-game series against SBVC on Thursday, April 23 at “The Jungle” baseball field knowing that a win will earn them their second consecutive conference championship. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
