Women’s soccer team set to play No. 5 ranked SBVC.

The Rio Hondo women’s soccer team (11-1-1, 4-0) look to extend their six-game winning streak against No. 5 ranked San Bernardino Valley College (10-0-4, 3-0-1) in a Foothill Conference showdown on Oct. 24 in San Bernardino.

Rio Hondo come off a dominating 6-0 win against Victor Valley College (3-11-1, 1-3) on Tuesday, their 10th shutout of the season, and aim to display the same passion and energy against SBVC.

The Roadrunners have not allowed a goal since Sept. 19 and have outscored their opponents 24-0 in their last six games.

Head Coach Jennifer Tanaka credits the entire groups’ work rate as the primary source for the Roadrunners impressive defense this season.

“Every player on our team has a role in defending,” said Tanaka.  “And collectively, the team has done a great job putting forth effort to defend as a unit.”

She added, “This mentality has been a key for the teams’ successes and earning our 10th shutout [against Victory Valley] for the season.  We have the goal of playing good defense and making sure we play a determined style to win the ball.”

SBVC defeated Cerro Coso  8-0 on Tuesday; four days after a scoreless draw against Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga.

The San Bernardino Wolverines, who were recently ranked No. 3 in Southern California and No. 5 in state in the CCCAA poll, come into Friday’s game having scored 30 goals in their last five games.

The Roadrunners, who are ranked No. 5 in Southern California and No. 12 in state, will certainly be tested against an undefeated SBVC squad.

“SBV is a great team and they have always been a tough opponent, but if we are willing to put our hearts into the game, I know we can fight for a ‘W’ on the road,” Tanaka said.

Tanaka believes that working hard for the entire match will be an important component in determining the result of the game.

“Consistency is going to be a key and being hungry to win every ball,” she said.

“We can only control what we do and that is to be ready to compete, to give our best and to play our hearts out.  I believe this will be a great game for us.”

A win for the Roadrunners will place them five points ahead of SBVC atop the conference standings.

The game will be played on Friday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. at the SBVC soccer field.
