The Rio Hondo College baseball team (16-6, 23-11) will travel to Palm Desert today to play College of the Desert (6-16, 6-27) in what has become a crucial game in their quest for a Foothill Conference title.
Rio Hondo beat Desert, 9-0, on Tuesday, in the Jungle at Rio Hondo, to maintain their status at the top of the Foothill Conference standings.
The Roadrunners currently remain tied with both San Bernardino Valley College (16-6, 24-10) and Chaffey College (16-6, 19-15) for the best record in conference play.
A win today for the Roadrunners and a loss from both Chaffey and San Bernardino would clinch the title for Rio Hondo and the conference champion seed in the Regionals.
Chaffey College will host Cerro Coso today in Rancho Cucamonga and San Bernardino play Barstow at home.
Rio Hondo have control of their own destiny as two wins in their remaining two games against College of the Desert will automatically give them the conference title regardless of the outcomes in the games played by Chaffey and San Bernardino.
Rio Hondo lost to College of the Desert earlier in the season, handing Desert their first win of the year, and will be cautious in trying to avoid the same outcome.
The Roadrunners finish conference play Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the Jungle at Rio Hondo College.
