Women’s tennis team off to a bad start

The Rio Hondo Women’s Tennis Team catches a tough break as they fall to El Camino College on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

The Women’s Tennis team tried to bounce back on a chilly Tuesday afternoon after their first season loss to the experienced and deeply talented, Mt. Sac. Despite a valiant effort from the Roadrunners, the team was unable to capture the win against El Camino College.

The players knew that teams were going to be a lot stronger in the South Coast Conference. Along with a new conference, comes a new set of rules. Players are still having trouble adjusting and finding their groove against unfamiliar teams and situations.

As the matches were almost underway, Head Coach Karen Unger kept reminding her players to keep calm and to play like they train. Although Rio Hondo fought hard, players were not able to completely capitalize on their opponent’s weaknesses allowing El Camino to win 5-1 in singles matches.

The results are not ideal but Coach Unger seems to always be very proud and supportive of her players for the work that they put in day in and day out. She sees much potential in her team and remains optimistic for the upcoming games. Even with tough losses, the lady Roadrunners kept their head up and displayed good sportsmanship the entire afternoon.

The team’s next home game will be on Thursday, March 6 at 2 p.m.
