Men’s basketball team starts the season 1-2

Rio Hondo’s men’s basketball team opened the season with two loses in its first three games, including Monday’s 81-72 loss to East Los Angeles College.

The Roadrunners split a pair of games last week by defeating Cerritos College, but losing a close two point game to West Los Angeles.

The Rio Hondo men’s basketball team hosted the East Los Angeles Huskies in Rio’s first home game of the 2013-14 season.

Rio went into the game with a 1-1 overall record on the young season. A big win versus Cerritos College and a close lose against West Los Angeles College. The Huskies came into the game with a 1-2 overall record in the season. The Huskies escaped with a 81-72 win. Rio proved to be a team that could comeback any time no matter what the score was.

Rio Hondo started the game off slow. The Huskies came in fast during the game. Basket after basket the huskies were converting on every possession. The Roadrunners trying to keep up with the Huskies and narrowed the lead down to eight points.

As the second half began the Roadrunners came out slow and ELAC came out fast and took advantage of Rio’s mistakes. Shawn Benn of Rio playing solid defense as he was proving to be a factor in the game. Benn came into the game second in points in the Foothill Conference averaging 20.5 points a game along with 4.5 rebounds. Shooting 56% from the field and 63.6% from the three-point line.

The Roadrunners put a decent comeback but it wasn’t enough as the Huskies of East Los Angeles won the game by a final score of 81-72.

The Roadrunners showed that they are capable of winning and proved to have great chemistry for the team. Rio Hondo will have a tough schedule ahead of them as they take on Cypress College next. Cypress College has an overall record of 2-2.

Rio Hondo Men’s basketball team had it’s first game of the preseason on Nov. 9th against Cerritos College at their home.

Starters for Rio Hondo included Freshmen, Shawn Benn (F), Leo Maldana (F), Anthony Farmer (G), and Jonathan Cortez (C), And Sophomore Juan Vanegas (F). Shawn Benn had a total of 27 points, eight rebounds, and one assist in the 28 minutes he played, giving him a great start this season.

Freshmen Guard Anthony Farmer, had a total of 17 points, seven assist, three steals, and one rebound in the 36 minutes he played.

Off the bench freshmen Kyle Maloof scored 12 points and had a total of six rebounds. Cerritos starting Guard Victor Jones (G) scored 21 points and had a total of five steals on our roadrunners.

Cerritos has a history of winning home games, but our Roadrunners came out with a win by 12 points, Final score being 82-70.

The Roadrunners faced their second game against West LA with a Final Score of 87-85 West LA.

The Roadrunners came up short by two points, but put up a good fight until the very end. Forward Leo Maidana had an average of 18 points, six rebounds, two steals, and two blocked shots.

From West LA Guard Brandon Hood had a total of 18 points as well, including two rebounds, two assisted shots, and one steal.

Rio Hondo Men’s basketball team now has a 1-1 record, facing their next game at Rio Hondo against East LA college.
