Rio Hondo rolls to third conference win

Rio Hondo Men’s Soccer team faced Victor Valley College in a Foothill Conference match on October 15th and came away with another shut out. Rio Hondo was easily able to win with a 3-0 score.

The first Rio Hondo goal came early at the 18th minute. Midfielder Miguel Mendoza, #10, snuck the ball into the bottom corner with a powerful strike from 20 yards out.

Victor Valley goalie, Edson Sandoval, had no chance as he was unable to stretch out for the save.  Sandoval had already seen four shots come his way and was able to deflect two of them, but even early on, Rio Hondo’s relentless offense was no match for Victor Valley.

The second Rio score came from #13, Rolando Hernandez, with just three minutes left in the first half. Hernandez found himself with the ball just outside the goalie box.

Victor Valley defense was nowhere to be found. Hernandez took advantage of his good look at the net and put it just outside Sandoval’s reach.

Hernandez’s perfectly aimed shot banked off of the far post for the second score of the game.

Rio Hondo showed solid work ethic throughout the game.  Their defense was stingy and their offense was on point.  Victor Valley’s goalie and Rio Hondo’s goalie, Edward Maya played two very distinct games. Maya showed secure hands as every ball that came his way was easily safeguarded. Maya was able to get Rio Hondo their third straight shut-out win.

Not to say that Maya had an easy game. Maya faced many dangerous throw –in’s from the sidelines and into the goalie box from Victor Valleys Adam Franco, but Maya was steadfast and his determination to keep the shutout was uncanny.

Another stand out player for Rio Hondo was #6, midfielder Alex Casas. Not only did Casas’ assist on both goals, but his nimble footwork and speed kept the possession time in favor of Rio.

Casas was also able to produce a few shots on goal for himself, which included a header from inside the box and a powerful strike from a distance that unfortunately navigated just above the opponent’s crossbar.

Alex Salazar put the game away scoring the final goal with only nine minutes left in regulation for a final score of 3-0.

After defeating Victor Valley College, Rio jumped to the top the standings, being the only undefeated team in the Foothill Conference at 3-0.
