Rio Hondo alumni Abel Avila was recently awarded a full scholarship to the division two university Notre Dame of Cleveland, Ohio.

Avila’s scholarship fully covers his participation in wrestling and academic courses.

Avila graduated from Rio Hondo with a 3.4 GPA and a state title as part of the wrestling team in the spring season.

Avila responded to the award saying, “I worked so hard to earn my scholarship and a wrestling state title”. Avila’s success derived from his “lack of a social life”, which led him to “reach his goals”.

As one of the few distinguished athletes to receive an out-of-state scholarship this past semester, Avila hopes to continue his success and represent Rio’s athletics in the fall at Notre Dame.
