Rio Hondo men’s soccer team gets first win

After a rough start Rio Hondo’s Men’s soccer team takes their first win of the year with a 1-0 victory at home Sept. 11 against Irvine Valley.

The team struggled to keep possession of the ball through out the game but they showed determination and passion. Coach Orlando Brenes said,  “Winning one game would get them over the hump”.

It was a big a game for the Roadrunners, the team now holds a record of 1-3-1. The  1-0 victory marked the first goal of the season for the struggling team.

Freshman Jesus Garcia was able to score 10 minutes before half giving the Roadrunners a slight lead.

Garcia was asked how he felt after scoring he said ,“ First of all I was very happy, that was a goal I needed to set this year for my self personally but this is not a one man team, the win was a team effort”.

The second half was an even game offensively for both teams, while Roadrunners kept their defense strong. The game could have ended with more goals for Rio if they would have capitalized on many scoring opportunities.

Gracia thinks this game will bring the team closer and win or lose the team will always put effort. Both Brenes and Garcia hope this game will encourage the team to continue to win through out the season.

Although Brenes would still want to improve the level of intensity of the team, being able to play a full 90 minute game and being able to play at the same aggressiveness as the opponent, he added, “If we do that will do great”.

The Roadrunners will end their pre-season away facing San Diego  Mesa  and Mira Coasta.
