Security vs Privacy, FBI vs Apple

After hearing so much about the FBI asking Apple to assist them in the unlocking of the San Bernardino gunman’s iphone by creating a “back door” that as of right now, dose not exist. To then taking it out to our very own campus to ask the students their opinion on Security vs Privacy for the student speak out, caused me to really ask myself, “what do you think?”

It’s really easy for me to say, well security is more important, there might  be some crucial information on that phone, that could lead the authorities to others terrorist who may have played a part in the slaying of 14 innocent people and injuring 22 others.

Or why did this happen, why were these people targeted, this could also bring some kind of closure to the family members of the victims.

There could be information about other terrorist organizations within our own community or even plans of future terrorist attacks that could be prevented.

It could be filled with a bunch of Instagram selfies and Snapchat notifications, there is no guarantee that there will be any information on that phone at all and once that back door is created there is no way of keeping it locked.

The FBI says that this tool will only be used once and only on one phone. But according to Apple once they recreate this program that will not delete any information after 10 unsuccessful tries, this technique can be used over and over again on all Apple devices, it would be like creating a master key with the ability of opening hundreds of millions of locks to anything from banks, businesses, restaurants and homes.

Now that puts a whole new spin on things. It’s easy for me to say, “Yeah, create the software, I don’t have anything to hide. Nor do I have thousands of dollars in the bank.” But what about all the hard working, tax paying americans who do have confidential information and thousands of dollars in the bank, or businesses that have employees personal information on file, restaurants that have customers credit card numbers. It’s endless what could happen if a master key is created.

With all that being said, these are the situations that we the people of these United States of America  take before a federal judge and trust that those that have been placed in these positions will make the right decision, not based on feelings or emotions but based on evidence and information that will be presented by both parties  weather or not we agree.

At the end of the day this is a very controversial topic and I don’t know all the details of what will actually be done or what can actually happen if this master key is created, so I am going to leave this in the hands of the judges.
