Rio Prepares Free Taxes For Students

Rio Hondo is now preparing taxes for students from February 3 to April 14 at the Administration of Justice Building in room 203, from 9:30am – 2:00pm.

Every year, Rio Hondo College offers free tax preparation to all students. who make less than $50,000 a year. Instead of paying a tax preparer, students can save money and time at RHC. However, there are only a few things needed Rio Hondo College requires that all students bring a photo I.D., a social security card for yourself, spouse; who needs to be present as well, and dependents. Also, birthdates must be provided for all and a copy of last year’s federal return. If you would like your refund deposited into your account, please provide a blank check. Feel free how you would like to receive your return. Either direct deposit, or your address can be utilized.

However, there are several forms that Rio doesn’t prepare. Rio does not handle the following forms: 1040WR, schedule (C,D,E,F,SE), rental property, and farm income.  In order to file these forms, Rio students must go elsewhere instead. To file taxes on married filing joint returns, both spouses need to be present. A letter from the SSA office is acceptable. Remember in order to claim dependents, they must have resided with you for the minimum of six months.

Tax preparation is available Monday through Friday. Walk-ins are available only on Fridays. Do not park in staff parking and remember Rio only prepares taxes from now until April 14. However, there will be no tax preparation on February 17th and March 31.
