Nation’s Capitol on Edge After Car Crashes into Two Officers; Killing One

One Capitol Police officer was killed and another severely injured by a car that rammed though a barricade protecting the US Capitol building on April 2. The driver ran towards officers wielding a knife. shot and killed he was.

The Incident

The attack occurred at 1 a.m. at a  police checkpoint on Constitution Avenue, 100 yards away from the senate and staff entrance to the Capitol. Meanwhile, a press conference took place as the incident happened. Therefore, the Capitol locked down. Fortunately, it lasted only a few hours. Consequently, National guard, Capitol Police, and Park Police flooded the scene and set up a perimeter.

According to D.C. Metropolitan Police, suspect Noah Green turned his blue sedan into a weapon. He was a 25 year old mentally ill, Nation of Islam follower from Indiana currently living in Virginia.

D.C. Officer’s Grief intensifies

Officer William “Billy” Evans,  an 18-year veteran of the force, was pronounced dead three hours after the incident took place. Not known is the other officer’s identity.

Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said, “He began his USCP service on March 7, 2003, and was a member of the Capitol Division’s First Responder’s Unit. Please keep Officer Evans and his family in your thoughts and prayers.” 

Evans has been the fourth D.C. officer to die since the Jan 6. Insurrection . In the same vein, Brian D Sicknick collapsed inside the Capitol Police station. Pepper sprayed and beaten as he defended the Capitol hours before, he was. In addition, two other officers, Jeffrey Smith and Howard Leibengood, committed suicide days later.

National guard have been posted at the Capitol since the riot and barricades have just began to be taken down after being up for three months.
