Senior Preview Day At RHC

Rio Hondo College Welcomes Our Senior High School Guests

Advocacy Week, which began on March 6 and ended on the 8, is a time for those with a cause to stand up and speak on it. Among those groups at Rio Hondo were the DREAMers, WOMXN’S, and the LGBTQ organizations that were given the platform of a three day course to talk about the rights that belong to their groups.

Along with all this, Rio had the privilege of hosting Senior Preview Day. This event lasted two days, and gave chances to different neighboring high schools to send out their eager and prospective seniors to explore and get to know the campus. Much was going on, and one could see the excitement in the next generation of RHC students.

The mid-quad cluttered with high school seniors being led around by fellow RHC staff and chaperones. Signs were held high to be seen, as large groups of various students roamed the campus and were given a chance to check out the different exhibits held like the WOMXN’s VIP organization.

Some brave seniors even joined in on the movement for the “Men’s March” which had students walking down a path in red high heels. Booths were also set up with different clubs, such as JCPR and PUENTE offering information about the benefits of joining.

Some students were very willing and had much to say about how they felt about Rio Hondo and their personal goals as far as majors and careers. Leslie Bracamontes from Mountain View High School gave a statement.

“I like the school very much actually it’s pretty cool,” Bracamontes said, “It is very close to home and I am looking to start in Summer!” Bracamontes told sources that she wants to become a future elementary school teacher.

Another student, Sofia Garcia from Whittier High School had this to say, “I love the campus and its view,” Garcia said, “I’m currently undecided, I am thinking about psychology, but then I want to do like magazine or journalism or even majoring in criminal justice.”

Senior Angel Gamboa from Ruben Salazar High School commented, “I like the campus it’s nice it feels comfortable,” Gamboa said, “The campus is very close to home and I’m looking to pursue a major in mechanical and or constructional engineering.”

Another student from Ruben Salazar High School, Andres Gasca shared his thoughts.

“I like the campus a lot and I want to come and start classes here,” Gasca said, “I literally live down the street from Rio and I’m looking to begin my automotive career working on cars.”

Nothing but bright futures are ahead for these young individuals whose drive is very high in their pursuit for a better education and career. RHC also provided our guests with a special complimentary lunch.

Day one seniors were served by the In-N-Out truck, while day two seniors were able to enjoy homemade tacos with meat of their choice.

Overall it was successful week for Rio Hondo College, and the college can bet on new students registering for classes in the summer and fall.
