Yolanda Ramirez Dedicates Award to All Classified Staff

The first ever Classified Employee Award was granted to Yolanda Ramirez, Secretary in the Math and Science Division, by President Teresa Dreyfuss and the Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees April 12, at Rio Hondo College.

The award commends a person who is a shining example of professionalism in their field of work, goes beyond their required job duties, stays committed to the principles of the California Community College and local College District mission, among other astute qualities.

Ramirez expressed her appreciation for the award, and made clear that her work could not be done without the help of CSEA staff, “I am humbled and grateful for this recognition, and I must say that I could never accomplish much of anything I do here at Rio, without the continued support and hard work of every CSEA staff member. The work of classified staff is …the magic that happens behind the scenes. We support our faculty and our students every day, sometimes without notice. I proudly receive this award in their name, too.”

“Participating in CSEA and District Committees improves cohesiveness and solidarity among the members of CSEA’s Chapter #477, and it asserts my belief that I (and all CSEA Staff) do have a voice. Employees can create positive change that affects all Classified Staff and students at Rio,” said Ramirez.

In a message to encourage new staff, Ramirez explained why their involvement is crucial, “employees can and should continue the legacy inherited from dedicated union members who helped secure our rights and benefits as members of the California School Employees Association (CSEA).”

The Board of Governors, the Chancellor’s Office, and the Foundation for California Community Colleges initiates the Classified Employee award, and the beneficiaries are nominated by their peers.

The award will be granted annually for Classified Employees throughout the entirety of the Community College System, in an effort to commemorate Classified Employees and the exceptional work they do.

Cynthia Pallini, Yolanda’s Leadership Academy group member, alongside Sandra Rivera, California School Employees Association President, both endorsed Ramirez’s Nomination.
