Scholarship opportunities available at Rio Hondo

Throughout, Rio Hondo College there are many opportunities that students pass by everyday by simply looking up. Student at Rio Hondo range from all ages from high school student trying surpass their peers to middle aged men and women trying to earn their degree. Nevertheless, the problem has become with these students staring at a screen while walking.

Upon my search for an activity occurring at Rio Hondo all i had to do was look up and glimpse at a simple yellow board. The Rio Hondo Calendar listed off every activity occurring on campus which made it simple for me to walk into a classroom to attend a meeting focusing on scholarship tips for student of all ages.

Jessica Pera held the meeting for students to attend with only four students throughout the room. She gives tip on not creating “your story” into a sob story because many student tend to believe telling their hardships will earn them a scholarship. She begins the meeting by stating “ GPA and grades are only half the story.”

She continued to pass out a sheet that lists off criteria that each individual should look for in a person to ask for a letter of recommendation. Along with these sheets of paper there is a sample essay to look to for guidance. Pera continues to give tips to the student of all ages around the room.

She proceeds to stress on the topic of recycled essays from courses taken by students in their past English 101’s classes and not to use for scholarship essays. Once the story is well put together all students should proofread their essay to make sure they have the best possible chance of being in the top choices for the scholarship prize.
