Rush to Discover Rio
Discover Rio is a two- day event on campus September seventh and eighth where students have the opportunity to see if they’re interested in joining a club. The first day is jam- packed with information about the clubs, raffles, free school supplies and refreshments. The second day is when all the clubs sell a variety of snacks and beverages to fundraise.
Among the clubs available are the Veterans club, Artist Creating Theatre
(ACT), and Journalism, Communications and Public Relations (JCPR). The Veterans club raises money for veterans and their families, they encourage veterans to return to school and help them with the transition back to school. They volunteer at veteran organizations and offer generous amounts of information. Their meetings are every Wednesday at 1:30pm in room SS150.
ACT is club dedicated to the appreciation and promotion of all creative aspects of the theatre arts. The majority of their fundraising goes toward events and productions. They highly encourage students to express their creativity and empower students to pursue careers in theatre. They meet every Monday and Wednesdays at 6:30 in room C155.
JCPR is a club on campus that allows students to develop skills for the media and publishing world. You will learn how to write scripts, copy edit, edit videos and do press releases. JCPR meets Monday and Wednesday 12:15pm to 12:50pm in room B112.
The second day started off busy. Clubs sold various things, and some even gave things away. Some of the items included but were not limited to candy, drinks, and various savory and even spicy food. The Art Guild sold cupcakes, Graphic Design sold donuts. Child Development Club had a wide array of candies to sell that would satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth. The Chinese Culture Club sold istant noodles and green tea. JCPR was selling hot cheetos with cheese, and to cool down that tasteful fire in your mouth ACT was selling refreshing popsicles. Although clubs were selling food, One in Christ and Spectrum (formerly known as the GSA) were giving away juice and skittles respectively.
It wasn’t just clubs promoting during the event, many of the student services had their booths stationed throughout the lower quad. One of those services was from the Transfer Center. “Discover Rio allows the transfer center to connect with students face-to-face and share our resources with them,” said Tam Nguyen, a Transfer Center student services assistant.
Students genuinely seemed to enjoy the event, Ever Leon spoke to us and said that “Discover Rio was a nice way to promote the clubs and get a feel of what the atmosphere would be like.”
If you missed out on the fun this time, keep an eye out for future events.
