As the Rio Hondo Road Runners entered their first Forensics tournament, excitement and first time jitters filled the air!

The tense vibes did not keep the Forensics Speech and Debate team from succeeding and ultimately breaking out in their first tournament of the term.

The PSCFA 2013 Warm-Up Tournament was held at El Camino College Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28.

Rio Hondo was represented by seven debate teams and nine individual event speakers, which involved a total of 17 students.

RHC went home that evening with two honorable first time break out awards.

Despite the fact that this tournament was only warmups, the team always approaches each match with open minds and desire to improve, regardless the level of difficulty.

Coaches Libby Curiel and Grant Tovmasian agreed that they were were “more than happy to have more than one first place victory” at this event.

The team succeed in bringing home two awards of Excellence by Victor Wright excelling in Novice Prose Interpretation and Daniel Ybarra in Novice Impromptu Speaking.

The entire team got to know one another a lot more throughout the course of this tournament. Most importantly, they  adapted to the competitive aspects of the Forensics competition, which is preparing them for future matches.

In all, the team definitely kicked off the season the right way.

If you’re interested in the world of Forensics and want to support your campus and community team, be sure to attend Rio Hondo’s next debate tournament.

The next tournament will not only count against or for RHC this season, but the level of importance is extremely high  this time around this match is where everything will officially begin.

The  next official debate tournament will be held at Irvine Valley College on Oct. 11. The theme of this tournaent is “Free for Me”.
