Historic Uptown Whittier hosts it Farmers Market every Friday on the corner of Bright and Philadelphia.

Historic Uptown Whittier hosts their very own Farmers Market every Friday.  Located on Bright and Philadelphia street the markets hours are 8am- 1pm. The Farmers market is a community gathering place for locals to personally meet the Farmers who grow the produce. We have the opportunity to learn how and where the food is produced. When you buy directly from the farmer you can also build a relationship with them as well. Also while supporting the farmers who are providing for you just as much as they are providing for their families. We can learn how hard they work to bring us some of the freshest food we can get.

Support Your Local Businesses

This is as real as it gets. No long distance shipping or having the produce sit around for days before it’s in your hands. It goes straight from its peak to your basket. I asked Farmers Market shopper Richard Jeremiah why he prefers the local farmers market. Jeremiah replied,” The Farmers market is a better alternative than going to a regular grocery store like Ralphs or Stater Brothers. Number one you are supporting local businesses and the local economy. Number two you know this food is California grown and raised. As opposed to getting it shipped from China, Ecuador, or Mexico. When things are foreign they have to travel. They have a lot more additives to make the shelf life last longer. Who knows what else they’re doing to them. Monsanto.”

Help build a stronger community by purchasing food from local farmers which boosts local economy.

There is no need for gassing or chemicals because this food is seasonal. Seasonal food helps you reconnect with the natural cycle. Fruits and vegetables at the farmers market are the freshest and most flavorful available and it reflects through the truest flavors. This state of freshness guarantees that the food stays packed with its intended and most beneficial nutrients. There is no need for burning more fossil fuels because the food is local. For store bought food it takes thousands of miles on a plane to get to your plate. Regular agriculture pollutes the water, air, and soil with toxic products.  Farmers markets are far better for the environment because there is no need for pollution or extra packaging which only creates more trash.

Nourishment and Variety

You can also nourish yourself healthier with local foods than grocery store foods. These Foods in grocery stores can be sprayed with pesticides, antibiotics, hormones, and genetic modification. That can explain those super fat strawberries in a grocery store. Also these foods can be gassed or waxed for appearance. Instead of going to the grocery store you can hit the farmers market where the foods are minimally processed. Farmers do the most to grow the most beneficial products without using these toxic techniques the grocery store uses.

Nourish yourself with fruits at their peak of freshness. Take the opportunity to try different produce, flavors, and freshness.

Another reason to choose the farmers market is for the variety. Farmers markets offer foods that basic grocery stores don’t. For example fennel, rhubarb, jackfruit, red carrots, purple cauliflower and much more. There are flavors of fruits and vegetables out there that a lot of people are unaware about. Arrive early if you want the best and come late if you want the deals. As a bonus the farmers market allows you to get some Vitamin D from soaking up the sun. Wouldn’t you rather enjoy the beautiful weather while you can instead of rolling your cart through artificial lights? Plus the farmers market is a more comfortable place to meet friends, walk your dog, or take the family. If you’re open to it you could potentially find and try one new thing that you may have never discovered.
