Kim Kardashian Accused of Cultural Appropriation

Model and reality TV star, Kim Kardashian West, is being accused of cultural appropriation after posting a photo to her Instagram wearing an Indian headpiece she wore to her husband, Kanye West’s, Sunday Service this past Sunday.

In the photo captioned “Sunday Service Vibe”, depicts Kardashian West wearing a white off-the-shoulder dress with long gold earrings, gold bangles, and a gold headpiece. The headpiece is formally called an ‘maang tikka’ which is head jewelry traditionally worn by Indian brides. As soon as the photo was posted onto her Instagram, followers quickly called her out for cultural appropriation.

“Sis this ain’t “service vibe.” this is straight up CULTURE APPROPRIATION”, one commenter wrote on her photo. “MY CULTURE IS NOT YOUR ACCESSORY”, written by another commenter.

A History with Controversy

This isn’t the first time Kardashian West is being accused of cultural appropriation and it seems like it happens quite often. Although this is the first time she appropriates Indian culture, she repeatedly offends the Black culture. More than a few times she has posted photos wearing Fulani braids and although it has created so much controversy, she doesn’t seem to care what people think. She captioned a photo wearing the braids, “Hi can I get zero f***s please, thanks”.

In 2017, Kardashian West was also been accused of blackface in her KKW Beauty campaign photos. After releasing the photos, people were quick to notice an unusually darker skinned color Kim in the photos. Many even began posting a before and after photo of Kardashian West’s actual skin color and the skin color of her in the campaign photos to point out the darker skin tone. She explained herself and claimed that she was trying to achieve a more “moody” look to her photos. Fortunately this time, Kardashian West acknowledge the situation, apologized, and promptly replaced all the photos. This has been the only known apology she has given out of all the previous times she has been called out for appropriation.

“Just because she is famous doesn’t mean she gets a pass on cultural appropriation”, an Instagram commenter wrote on a photo of Kardashian West wearing braids.

A Worrying Trend

By the looks of it, it doesn’t seem like Kardashian West is going to stop the appropriation of different cultures. She has also been repeatedly seen wearing kimonos, which are traditional Japanese garments. Every time she is being called out for it, she never acknowledges the comments or even apologizes. Maybe she loves the attention and perhaps this is her way of having people constantly talk about her, even if it means offending many people and their culture.
