Brands Are Making New Clothes out of Old Plastics
Everlane is an online clothing retailer which just debuted their new collection of puffer jackets, fleece pullovers, and streamlined parkas. The company decided to use recycled plastic bottles in its new collection of jackets and pullovers.
Many shoe and clothing companies have followed Everlane’s footsteps by producing collections with materials made from plastic. Instead of disposing it, where it might end up in the ocean, companies decided to include in jackets or pullovers.
Recycling plastic bottles in clothing is a long and tiring process.
Companies must first clean the plastic, chop it down, turn the chips into pellets, and heat them to create yarn that can be woven into a fabric. Most of them are looking for answers for questions like how much it costs you to rent a 5 yard dumpster
Everlane isn’t the first company to use recycled plastic bottles in their collections. Rothy’s, a shoe brand which began in 2012 sells flats, loafers, and sneakers made from old plastic bottles. Girlfriend Collective has had much success selling colorful underwear made from plastic bottles. Many companies use this collection of clothing such as Reformation as a “cool girl” brand.
Many popular collections like Timberland and Adidas have decided to use recycled plastic bottles in future products.
Adidas decided to use recycled plastic in all of the products producing in the coming years.
CEO Ayana Elizabeth Johnson of the consulting firm Ocean Collective stated,“ Obviously we need to reuse the plastic we’ve already created. We need to stop making new plastic.”
Patagonia, a designer of outdoor clothing and gear was one of the first companies to use recycled plastic in their clothing lines which began in 1993.
Many of these companies are using recycled plastic bottles to keep out of harmful areas such as shorelines and the ocean. CEO Ayana Johnson is very happy companies are reusing plastic as it has endangered animals in the ocean. She said, “ We’ve seen whales beaching with hundreds of plastic bags in their stomachs. Whether animals suffocate, drown, or starve because they’ve ingested plastic, that’s obviously problematic.”
Everlane’s new clothing line was produced by more than 3 million bottles which are great for the environment.
