Student spotlight:

Adrian “Phelix” Felix

A man whose life revolves around his mission to spread the art of music across the world. “Advice for starters, don’t rely on others, shooting stars and comets, perfect night for stardom”, lyrics from the song Balance by Phelix of Illosophy. Better known to Rio Hondo College as Adrian Felix, a student who is majoring in Mass Communications.
Felix is a rapper, writer, DJ and lyricist; he is a part of a well-known music crew Illosophy, which features a genre of 90’s boom bap. Felix is a prime example of a student who is juggling schoolwork along with musical aspirations and an end goal to be a part of the music industry in one way or another.
After asking Felix what advise he would give to students pursuing music he stated, “They need to be sure to have their priorities straight beforehand, love the craft they are involved in and don’t be distracted or lose sight of their vision.”

These are some of the same objectives students tend to face when going to school and pursuing another goal. After asking Felix what some of his personal struggles as a student and pursuing his musical career he answered time management, making and sticking to his schedule and keeping a clear mind when focusing on school and when switching over and focusing on his lyrics.
Some of Felix’s musical influences include Mos Def, Andre 3000, The Notorious B.I.G., Lauryn Hill, Nas, Kanye West and Phonte. One of the first musical inspirations that brought Felix into the Hip-Hop scene was the first time he heard the song Juicy by The Notorious B.I.G., he said after hearing that song he liked the expressiveness and vulnerability he conveyed. “Biggie wore it as a badge of honor” said Felix “and people love him for that”.
Recording only for a little over 2 years, Felix has evolved in many ways as an artist. One of which was finding his way into the music crew known as Illosophy. He elaborated during our interview about how he became a part of the crew in 2013 after taking a Mass Communications class here on campus. It was in that class he met aspiring film director Francisco who eventually invited Felix to shoot a music video in Los Angeles, which is where the introductory began.
It was only a short while after Felix brought in a friend and producer by the name of Bicks Boogie. Illosophy has evolved into what it is today, a five-member crew that includes: Alpha Raw, Gallo One, Synnsere, Bicks Boogie, and Phelix.
