The new Associate Student Body President

Irina Alejandra Barajas is the new ASB president for this year. She began attending Rio Hondo in the fall of 09’ and she started off as ASB secretary, then she became club president and after that she became a student ambassador. Last year she was ASB vice president and this year she is finally the president.

Barajas stated that all the experience from being in all the other programs were the stepping stones that got her to where she is now.

An ASB president has many duties like running senate meetings on Fridays, attending meetings, making sure senators are doing as planned, and making sure the students are being heard.

Also, they find sources to advocate the students and they help represent the students.

On Aug. 27 ASB arranged the event to give out free pizza and President Barajas said, “A student thanked me for the pizza and said that was the only thing he had for lunch and probably the only thing he’ll have all day. I love that feeling I get when you help someone out.”

Being an ASB president you have many things going on and there has to be good communication and scheduling. She owns about four different calendars and she says you have to be on top of it because if you mess one thing up everything else also gets messed up.

On Mondays and Wednesdays she has class and after class she attends E board meetings. On Tuesdays and Thursdays she doesn’t have class but she comes to school to get things done and meet with students, faculty and staff.

Barajas said, “I grew up being a trouble maker and it was hard to change and be diplomatic. As long as we’re working as a team we’re making the school a better place.” She says it can get a bit frustrating when you envision something and it doesn’t turn out the way you wanted it to.

If any students have any questions or concerns, Barajas is more than happy to be the one reached out to, she can be found in the Student Union which is above the Rio Café.
