The Newest Netflix Series Will Have You Ugly Crying

There is always time to Netflix and Chill but sometimes you can go through a dry spell. If you have hit a dry spell, don’t worry because there is a new Netflix series that you will want to binge.

The newest Netflix series “Dead To Me” stars actress Christina Applegate, as newly widowed housewife Jen Harding and follows her life through the months after her husband’s passing. The series also co stars Linda Cardellini as Judy Hale, a free spirited middle aged woman with more on her mind than what appears.

Dead To Me Season 1

The series has released 8 episodes in the first season, each one running for 30 minutes. Within the episodes we see how Jen and Judy’s odd friendship forms when the two women meet at a grief counseling group. Without knowing it, you can quickly see that their friendship is something that both women didn’t know they needed.

Jen Harding is dealing with the loss of her husband in the worst way possible. Trying to keep it all together she harbors her sorrow and grief. These emotions turn into anger that she uses to drive her mission to find the hit and run driver that killed her husband. Because of this she lashes out multiple times at those she loves. New gal pal, Judy Hale, feels it is her responsibility to help her deal with these emotions and does anything she can to help.

A Trauma-dy For All

The show is a trauma-dy and it really unpacks the things that you usually don’t see on TV, love, loss, anger, and toxic relationships. Applegate talked about the importance of the show to her, “Jen, my character, is grieving in the worst way possible, but that’s her way.” Applegate said that there is no timeline for grief and everyone does it in their own way. That is what the series shows, how each family member grieved after Jen’s husband’s sudden passing.

Applegate said that the emotional releases that her character had was very cathartic. “Talking about problems that weren’t mine made me want to talk about my own.” Applegate said that she chose to start going to therapy after filming.

The Bigger Picture the Series Tackles

Another big issue that the show tackles in the normalization of preventative breast care measures. Leading star Christina Applegate had a double mastectomy back in 2008 after a breast cancer diagnosis. She brought this into the show because her character Jen Harding also had the procedure. The series shows the after effect it had on her marriage. “It hasn’t really been discussed on shows before; I don’t think there’s a lot of characters out there with double mastectomies.” Applegate said that playing this character brought up a lot of thoughts about her own procedure. “It’s a horribly painful process – emotionally, spiritually, physically – and I never really talked about it. I thought this was my chance to tell a little bit about me, but also all the women that have gone through that.”

There is no word yet about whether or not there will be a second season of Dead To Me. But the show ended on a cliffhanger that no one could have guessed. So if you’re trying to find a way to procrastinate on those final projects think about binging the newest Netflix series.
