Rebecca Niederlander: ‘What Do I Care? Part 1’ Preview

Rio Hondo’s next “Artist in Residence” exhibition will spotlight artist Rebecca Niederlander, with the title show “What Do I Care? Part 1”. The exhibition will be on display in the Rio Hondo Art Gallery and will kick off on Oct. 8, with a reception and artist talk on Oct. 9 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

All students, not just art students, are welcome to participate in this unique art project. It will progressively grow throughout the weeks, and I am tingled by the idea that others can be a part of the art show”, said Neiderlander.

Students can personally meet Niederlander and gain insight on the art project that’s been building up in her mind for months.

Niederlander came up with the idea of filling origami shaped boxes with hand-written secrets, turning them inside out and displaying them all around the school’s art gallery. She says, “As an artist there are a lot of things that go on in my head, and to have a space to make them real is always very exciting.”

Located in the gallery will be instruction sheets that will help students create the origami boxes. A calm and meditated space will be provided in the gallery throughout the course of the month, inviting students to come in and get creative.

Niederlander hopes that students will walk into the gallery during their breaks and spend time in there as they please. It will definitely be interesting to see the growth of this project as it will be changing week to week.

Don’t miss the upcoming “Artist in Residence” as it offers everyone a chance to play a part and contribute to the art with their own personal touches.

“What Do I Care? Part 1” will run until Nov. 6 inside Rio’s art gallery. Gallery daytime hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Evening hours are from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Wednesday.
