In the three previous years, ‘The W’ has only showcased works from established artists and advocates of art. This year, Chairman  Roberto Chavez decided to switch things up a bit and broaden the applicant opportunities For the first time ever, two students have been selected to display and sell their works alongside prestigious artists such as Yoshio Nakamura, Nancy Gunther, and Chavez himself.

The two honored students are both members of RHC’s El Paisano publication, and both will be selling prints of their digital photography.

Michael Carranza, Photo Editor of El Paisano, will be exhibiting his street photography that he has taken over the  past year.

Carranza has had been taking photos for a year and a half and is currently a part-time photgraphy student at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. His love of photography derives from the entire process of production.

“It’s very rewarding,” said Carranza. “From coming up with ideas to post prouction. I’m pursuing photography because its simply something I enjoy doing and it has opened my mind to different ideas and concepts which will be beneficial in other areas of art other than photography.”

His love of bustling cities and towns is evident in his works, and his ability to capture individuals candidly sets his photos aside from others in the same field.

Krystyn Bristol, Editor-in-Chief of El Paisano, has only taken photos from a hobbyist perspective. She first attained a camera in fall of 2011. Since, she has worn it around her neck with intention to capture memories on vacations, with family and friends, and on adventures. Bristol’s most recent collection of photography was taken at the Los Angeles and San Diego zoos. Her theme that will be showcased at ‘The W’ is animal photography, and she will be presenting a variety of animal photos that she produced in the past six months.

“I like to specifically shoot animals because I have no ability to control them. It’s not like photographing humans  that you can pose and tell what to do. Wild animals are unpredictable; it’s all about capturing the right moment at the right time”, said Bristol. “Even if I only sell one piece [at the show], it will be an accomplishment.”

El Paisano editorial cartoonist and RHC alumni Robert Sanchez is also being featured in ‘The W’ and will be displaying and selling his single line drawings of figures and images from his mind.

Be sure to stop by and support your fellow colleagues at the event as they are the first students to participate in the history of the show.

Friday night will feature hors d’oeuvre and drinks and a first look at all of the presented pieces. Saturday will be a six-hour opportunity to meet the artists and purchase pieces ranging from sculptures to drawings and paintings, along with the student’s photography and art.
