‘Paid Dues’ venue changed to San Manuel Amphitheater

by David Flores

Due to parking lot issues the  8th annual “Paid Dues” festival will be  held at the San Manuel Amphitheater  located at 2575 Glen Helen Pkwy, San Bernardino, CA 92407. The date is still the same, March 30 the only change is the location, which is 15 miles further from the original site.

The lineup this year offers a variety of artists that will please every type of hip hop listener.

For the diehard Hip-Hop heads, “Paid Dues” will be featuring legendary 1990 groups such as Mobb Deep, Souls of Mischief, and De La Soul.

Older fans should be excited for strong solo acts from the city of Pomona’s very own Suga Free, Westside Connection member WC, and Houston Texas rap veteran, Scarface.

Performers like Tech N9ne, Talib Kweli, and Immortal Technique all have a strong following but that’s a result of them each paying their dues. Another act that’s remain away from signing with a label and has received an unfair share of criticism is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. The rapper and producer duo currently have a huge single out titled, “Thrift Shop,” and recently were a part of the NBA All Star Game weekend promotions.

To get the whole experience it’ll be best to show up early. In addition to beating the crowd, there is the likelihood of catching some real sleepers in the afternoon performances. Two years ago, the four member Black Hippy group, which features rising star Kendrick Lamar played “Paid Dues” at their 3:30 p.m. time slot. Last year, Lamar was a “Paid Dues” headliner and at this year’s festival the whole Black Hippy crew is headlining.

Artists that may be a bit low-key include Dom Kennedy, Joey BadA$$, Jean Grae, Terrace Martin, and Killer Mike.

The festival is a place for everyone to feel free, have fun and enjoy music, acts like Juicy J, Trinidad James and Smoke DZA are sure to be encouraging activities that provide good times.

Tickets are available through ticketfly.com or at local retailer Music Revolution in Whittier on Washington Blvd.

Ticket prices may seem a tad bit steep with general admission costing $76, but with over 30 live performances scheduled no price can be put on the possibilities.
