The Rio Hondo Men’s water polo team has finally gotten their first win of the season against Los Angeles Trade-Tech College Sept. 28.

The men’s water polo team won by a score of 17-11, with Kent Mertins scoring a whopping four goals to help Rio Hondo get their first win of the season.

The Roadrunners started off their season losing their first 11 games, giving them an overall record of 1-11 and a 1-3 record in conference.

Rio Hondo goalie Nathan Paez was a major asset for the Roadrunners against LA Tech, getting a total of 10 saves in the game helping Rio maintain the lead until the end.

After only scoring one goal in their past two games, it was definitely nice to see Rio Hondo tally up 17 goals.

Aside from Mertens, Rio Hondo players Brian Barthelmess, Asatur Marsvanian and Walter Hochstrasser each got three goals apiece.

Anthony Najar also played his part, and managed to get two goals, an assist, and three out of 11 of the steals Rio Hondo got that evening against LA Trade-Tech.

Jeremy Foster and Cole Mumma also scored one goal each that evening, with the game ending 17-11.

After their first win of the season, Rio Hondo look to return to action Sept. 30 at the Cerritos College mini tournament where they will attempt to continue their stride.

Following the tournament, Rio Hondo will return to South Coast Conference play Oct. 3 as they will look to face Chaffey College at Chaffey at 4:15 p.m.
