Great finish to a long season

Rio Hondo's softabll team gathers together for a group picture after finishing their season with a 9-0 win against Barstow College.

The Lady Roadrunners have finished their season on a high note winning their last three ball games to bring their season record to 9-18.

“That’s all you can hope for to come out in bang,” said head coach Bianca Urquidi.

The most recent game for the Lady Roadrunners was a home game against Barstow on April 20 and they came out on top with the score of 9-0. They had great patience at the plate, timed their hitting and Michelle Wilkinson pitched another great game.

Their game against Antelope Valley on April 18 had a bit of a revenge factor, earlier on in the season they had lost to them 13-2 so they wanted to even the score. The Lady Roadrunners won with the score of 3-2.

When asked about their revenge victory coach Urquidi had this to say, “Well being that this is the first time that Rio Hondo has beat Antelope Valley in about ten years its pretty good.”

The Lady Roadrunners seemed to have Victor Valleys number this season. Earlier in the season they defeated them 10-4 and in their most recent meeting they won by an even bigger margin 16-7 on April 16.

“We were very patient at the plate and got good hits and ran good bases,” said coach Urquidi about their victory against Victor Valley. Pitcher Michelle Wilkinson pitched another great game and Victor Valley could not get more than two hits in an inning against her.

Coach Urquidi had high praise for her pitcher Michelle Wilkinson who she says stepped up big this year.

“She stepped up in that pitcher role and was able to shut down some teams that we didn’t know she was gonna be able to shut down.” She also had good praise for her catcher Connie Koenig who moved from the infield to play catcher.

From the beginning of the season Urquidi said, “We have a very young team.”

She believes that this very young team will continue to grow and the last three games of the season were evidence that they are going in the right direction. About looking forward to next season coach Urquidi said, “Just building on what we have now.”
