Rio Hondo Baseball falls short in State Championship

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, including Rio Hondo’s impressive baseball season. The Roadrunners left their mark in the conference games, but were runner-ups for the California State Championship title after losing to Cosumnes River College. The final game ended with a close score of 8-6 in a 12 inning game.

Rio had an unbelievable record throughout the season. After the final game, their overall record for the season is 40-5.

The Roadrunners had their conference winning streak broken by Cosumnes River College in their second game of the Southern California Super Regional competition in Burbank. The game ended with a score of 3-1.

Rio’s finished out strong, however, by taking out Orange Coast College in the State Final Four competition with a score of 5-4 in a 12 inning game.

After defeating Orange Coast, Rio also took out Sierra College with the ending game score of 4-1.

Although the team barely missed the title, the Rio walked away from the Conference and State Competition with various achievements.

The Roadrunners received high praise in the 2012 Foothill All-Conference Team. Coach Mike Salazar was named Coach of the Year and Andrew Morales was names Pitcher of the Year. Also, the Gold Gloves title was given to Christian Ibarra and Dominic Martinez.

After a fulfilling season, the team is already back at practice during the summer to prepare for their next season in Rio Hondo’s baseball field, also known as “The Jungle.”
