Black History Month at the Student Lounge festivities kick off Feb. 16

The Rio Hondo Student Life and Leadership Program announced a variety of on-campus events that will occur throughout the month of February in celebration of Black History Month.

The festivities kick off on Feb. 16 with an appearance by poet, writer, and author Arielle Estoria in SU201 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Following the spoken word artist event, two movies will be featured in the student lounge on Feb. 17 (Fruitvale Station) and Feb. 24 (The Great Debaters) from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

On behalf of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department, history faculty Abbie Perry will be presenting a screening and discussion of the 60-minute film “More Than a Month“.

In this documentary, filmmaker Shukree Tilghman explores the proposition that the continued celebration of black history month is counter-productive to the promotion of a “post-racial” America.
