Man and Woman gunned down behind Pomona market

A man and woman were gunned down behind a Pomona liquor store Tuesday night. Investigators are searching for the gunman, Pomona police officials said.

Just before 11pm, Pomona police were called to Perez Market at the corner of Ridgeway Street and Barjud Avenue following reports of a late night shooting, according to a police statement. Upon arrival, officers discovered a wounded man, Hugo Reynoso, 37, and a woman, Valerie Enriquez, 27, on the ground from gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Pomona Sgt. Brian Hagerty said police received multiple reports claiming that more than one person arrived in a vehicle and fired upon the couple. Hagerty stated dozens of shots were fired, some of which may have been captured on the markets surveillance footage.

“They were just sitting there,” Hagerty said of the victims.” It’s sad. They probably didn’t see it coming.”

The Pomona sergeant said investigators do not feel the shooting is gang related. The motive has yet to be determined.

Witnesses say the two victims fell together and died inches apart from one another. Oscar Corea, a friend of the victims, said he knew the man for many years. He said Reynoso was a good man who was known in the neighborhood. Corea said Reynoso and Enriquez, were good friends and not romantically involved. Neighbor Janey Anderson said Reynoso has lived in the area for more than a decade.

“He wasn’t homeless, but he’d hang out there and drink,” Anderson said. “He had an accident a few years back and hasn’t been the same since.”

Anderson said people hang out in the market’s parking lot and drink all night, even though the business closes at 9pm.

“I wish they could stop that,” she said. “There’s no reason for people to be there drinking.”
