Vons Foundation

The Rio Hondo College Foundation was presented with a gift from the Vons Foundation of $10,000 to help assist veteran students through the use of the Veterans Service Center’s Emergency Fund Loan.

On May 23, Dr. Ted Martinez and Foundation President Neal Welland were the ones to receive the representatives of the Vons Foundation for the presentation of the $10,000 award.

Veterans and eligible dependents from all five branches of the United States Armed Services have access to the temporary loans after passing a certain criteria that is done to each student by the Rio Hondo College Veterans Service Center.

The criteria is that of a minimum 2.0 GPA, must be enrolled in at least six units, and the student should not have any outstanding debts.

The loan amount per student is of $300 and must be paid back to the Veterans Emergency Loan Program within 30 to 60 days. There is no limit to the number of times veterans or eligible dependents can apply. Since the Veterans Service Center was established in 2008 more than 4,000 have been served.

Rio’s Veterans Center offers much more than just loans. The staff is highly qualified and knowledgeable in servicing our veterans in all that may consist of being a college student.

For instance, they service students with; study area, tutoring, priority registration, meetings with counselors, Ed plans, as well as handling all the benefits, payments, and transcripts relating to any veteran.

The Office hours for the Veterans Center during summer are Monday and Thursday from                                                            8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m in room SS150.
